Resistance to Change: Why We Kick and Scream - And How to Lean In With Curiosity Instead by Brenda R. Bryan

Everyone knows the saying: Change is the only constant. Yet, how many of us go kicking and screaming into change?

I was recently chatting with a sister coach who pointed out something fascinating about me: how differently I seem to approach change compared to most people she’s talked to. She noticed that I lean into each shift with curiosity rather than resistance. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my fair share of resistance. But over the years, life has taught me some powerful lessons about leaning in. Yes, I am leaning in — not running away or resisting, but stepping forward with curiosity and openness.

My first real memory of leaning in came from a deep discontent with my family life. My mother’s mood swings and her pressure for me to become a nurse (someone to care for her when she got sick) felt like a heavy weight to bear. But inside me was a longing to break free, to be creative, to work with my hands. That longing was a whisper from Spirit, guiding me toward my true path. So, I leaned in and pursued my degree in art.

I didn’t realize then that Spirit often speaks to us through our longings and discontent. Later, in my first job as a designer, I faced oppressive misogyny and sexism. Instead of giving up, I leaned into finding better ways to use my talents and found my place in the second wave of the feminist movement. That era was marked by resistance, as those clinging to the old ways and those demanding radical change clashed. Both sides resisted, but leaning in with curiosity helped me navigate the tension.

We all have some level of resistance to change. What I learned in college, and what the Brave Thinking Institute teaches, is to ask powerful questions, look at the big picture, and follow the signs when they appear.

Questions open doors.

In my coaching work, I see so many people afraid to make mistakes. They don’t realize the power that resides in choosing, in the freedom to try, fail, and get up again. Failure isn’t the enemy; it’s a prerequisite to success.

As a trained designer, I learned early to “try it on” – to ask, “What if we looked at it this way?” What if we leaned in with curiosity? That mindset opens the door to new perspectives and opportunities.

Too often, fear of change keeps us from even asking the question. But what I love about DreamBuilders’ work is the power that lies within the question itself, the creativity and possibility that emerge when we keep a corner of our minds open to change.

If you find yourself kicking and screaming at the door of change, try leaning in instead. Ask yourself, ‘What if this change is exactly what I need to grow?’ Let curiosity be your guide. The magic happens when you do.

Having a clear vision for your life can empower you to overcome resistance and reduce the time it takes to adjust to changes.

The Power of Clarity and Connection: When resistance arises, it’s an invitation to pause and ask: What matters most to me? What is the deeper purpose behind this change? When you connect with your “why” – your vision, values, and heart’s desire – resistance begins to soften. You start to lean into the change because it aligns with what truly matters.

Spiritual Insight: Mary Morrissey teaches that faith is the bridge between where you are and where you want to be. When you focus on what matters, you activate faith – a powerful energy that dissolves resistance and opens doors. Lean Into It.

Taking Aligned Action with Courage: Leaning into Resistance Doesn’t Mean Ignoring Fear or Pushing Through Blindly. It means acknowledging the fear, feeling it fully, and then choosing to act anyway with compassion and clarity. This is where transformation happens.

Practical Tips:

  • Break big changes into small, manageable steps.
  • Use affirmations or mantras to reinforce your vision.
  • Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your growth.
  • Celebrate every small victory to build momentum.

The Gift of Resistance: Growth, Wisdom, and Freedom

Resistance is not a roadblock; it’s a doorway. On the other side of resistance lies growth, wisdom, and freedom. When you learn to dance with resistance, you become a powerful creator of your life and your mission.

Imagine a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon. That struggle is resistance, but it’s also what strengthens its wings. Without resistance, the butterfly wouldn’t be able to fly.

Just as the butterfly struggles to emerge from its cocoon, resistance is not something to fear or fight against; it’s a sacred teacher. It’s the very force that strengthens us, preparing us to soar. One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that listening to the soft signals of resistance, those subtle nudges and longings, is far less painful than waiting for life to throw a “baseball” of undeniable clarity our way.

I remember a time when I pleaded with Spirit to help me hear those whispers before the hard knocks arrived. And now, with more life and wisdom behind me, I see resistance as a divine guide pointing me toward what truly matters. When you learn to understand your resistance, lean into it with faith, and take aligned action, you unlock your true potential. You step boldly into your vision, becoming the powerful creator you were always meant to be.

So, the next time you feel that inner pushback, remember that resistance is not your enemy. It’s your invitation to grow, deepen your wisdom, and claim your freedom. Lean in with curiosity, courage, and faith, and watch the magic unfold.

If you are feeling drawn to step into this magic, into the room where this transformation takes place, I invite you to reach out. I have multiple options to feed into your curiosities. If you thrive in groups, I’ve got you covered. If you prefer one-on-one environments, I will meet you there. If you find breakthroughs in a combination of communities, we can tailor your transformation to meet your needs. This is about taking the first steps and breaking through the resistance to change. You weren’t meant to do this alone. It’s time to emerge from your cocoon.
