It Can Be Easy: Reclaiming Ease in a Culture of Hustle by Brenda R. Bryan

One of the main programming messages in our culture is that life has to be hard. We’re conditioned to adapt to social and work conditions that were once referred to as the “American way.” And yes, it still is for many of us! However, this relentless push toward struggle and grind is causing immense harm: unhealthy habits, broken relationships, depleted health, and a loss of time, money, and freedom. It’s like we’re running on a treadmill that’s speeding up, but the destination is out of sync with our soul’s true rhythm.

What lights me up about the latest research is that science is now catching up with what spiritual wisdom has always known: the “hard way” is not the only way. There is a better way. A way that honors the sacred balance of effort and ease. With this new understanding, we get to shift our beliefs from “more is more” to “less is more.”

What do I mean by this? I’m not sure about you, but I often find myself working from the mindset that if I work harder, longer, and push through exhaustion, I’ll prove my value. Maybe you’ve felt that too. Long hours, proving yourself to a boss, sacrificing your well-being for the grind. But here’s the spiritual truth: when you have a clear vision for a life you love, you don’t have to prove anything. You get to create from a place of aligned power, not pressure.

Even bosses, those who seem to have it all together, are suffering from heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and disconnection from loved ones. Is this the example we want to live by? It’s an unsustainable cycle that drains our collective energy and dims our light. I’m not saying you’ll never work hard or put in long hours when it truly matters. But here’s the gift: you get to choose how you show up. You get to choose between ease and effort.

My mentor, Mary Morrissey, often says, “It can be easy.” At first, I thought, “Yeah, right, maybe for her.” I projected all my pain and limiting beliefs onto her experience. But no, Mary didn’t have it easy. What she did have was a deep investment in spiritual principles that gave her a perspective to carry her through tough times. She used those principles to close the gap between her current reality and the dream she was building. Watching her live this truth inspired me to do the same. That’s why I came to the Brave Thinking Institute: to shift my mindset and breathe fresh life into my thinking.

And you know what? She’s right. Diving deep into these spiritual principles is showing me how my old programming blocks my “It can be easy” truth. But oh yes, it can be easy!

So today, let’s explore some mindset shifts that support your ability to achieve greater results with more flow and less friction.

First out of the gate: Taking breaks and time off is not just a luxury, it’s a spiritual practice that supports greater productivity. It prevents mental fatigue, enhances focus, boosts creativity, and reduces stress. When you honor your need to rest, your brain recharges, and your work becomes more inspired and sustainable.

Here’s why breaks are so powerful:

Just like your physical muscles, your brain tires from sustained effort. Breaks allow your mind to restore its energy, preventing burnout and enabling you to sustain deep focus. When you relax into your work and rest, you actually get more done in less time.

How often do you push through, thinking you have to? The truth is that stepping away, even briefly, clears mental clutter and invites a fresh perspective. This renewed clarity leads to sharper focus and better problem-solving.

Your ability to innovate and create is fueled by imagination. When you step away from a challenge, your subconscious mind continues to work behind the scenes, making new connections and opening doors to creative solutions. This is where the magic of spiritual principles comes alive, where you tune into your divine guidance, your intuition.

Ask yourself: What are your guiding principles for meeting life’s challenges? Because yes, those challenges will come. Your ability to meet them with grace and power is strengthened when you take breaks. These pauses help you de-stress, relax, and engage in activities that uplift your spirit, creating a positive, productive environment for your work and relationships.

By preventing burnout and maintaining mental clarity, breaks help you sustain a productive, joyful workflow over time. Taking breaks is not a sign of weakness; it’s a strategic approach for optimizing your performance and prioritizing your well-being.

When you live in alignment with your dream and spiritual principles, your soul calls you to this rhythm of effort and ease. It’s not just about working hard, it’s about working holy.
